Early in my career, a supervisor taught that we needed to walk through the door and magically shed our emotions. “You’re here to work,” he said. I subconsciously carried that belief around for years.
But our emotions stay within our bodies and affect those around us — without uttering a single word. Beyond that, what kind of care do we actually give when we’re disconnected from ourselves and suppressing our emotions?
Most people I meet in healthcare, especially in LTC, choose this profession because we are incredibly loving and giving. What if we optimize our ability to provide care through our hearts — rather than trying to hide or stay locked up in our heads?
It took the tragic and early loss of my mom to wake me up to this new idea.
She was 50.
It should’ve been a beautiful, happy time for my family. I had just welcomed my first child after years of fertility challenges. I staggered backward, reeling at her sudden loss — brutally contrasting the fresh, new life of my precious son. As if a light clicked on in a dark room, I saw everything adding up.
I was a workaholic: putting everyone else’s needs before my own and never caring for myself.
I realized the heavy toll daily stress was taking on my life — and my body.
I saw a new link between stress and my infertility. I’d paid the price of working myself to the bone, overextending and wearing myself out with worry. Both my children came when I had finally stopped trying to get pregnant and let go of control. When I released the expectation of what it ‘should’ look like, I received what I deeply wanted.
My mom’s passing gave me the gift of new perspective. A chance to jump off the merry-go-round and ask myself, “Am I doing what I love?” Life could change in an instant. Time to begin living.
What I really loved about my pharmacy work was connection with others. As I rebuilt my life, I discovered the importance of creating balance and wholeness. And that led to Reficio Wellness.
